Complaints over "sick" Norton joke

Published Wednesday, Jan 15 2003, 17:19 GMT | By Neil Wilkes
Thirteen viewers have complained to the ITC about a joke Graham Norton made concerning the death of Bee Gee Maurice Gibb.

On Monday's edition of his Channel 4 chat show, V Graham Norton, he remarked on the passing of Gibb: "I bet the heart monitor was singing the tune of Staying Alive."

The 'joke' was made just one day after Gibb died of a heart attack, prompting many viewers to ring up and complain.

The regulator said that the number of complaints received was "quite high for Graham Norton's programme," as most of the audience already know his style of humour.

"People rarely complain to us about Graham Norton's programme because they know the kind of content he has on," an ITC spokeswoman said. "We are not driven by the number of complaints [but] will investigate the joke."

A spokeswoman for Channel 4 apologised for Norton's comments: "Graham is known for his cheeky, irreverent humour. But we are sorry if he caused any offence to viewers."
