The former EastEnders star spent four years on the children's drama, playing the rebellious Peter "Tucker" Jenkins.
He will appear as the uncle of Patrick "Togger" Johnson, who faces expulsion from the sixth form after falling behind with his coursework.
Carty said of his return to the show: "Going back to Grange Hill was hugely nostalgic and quite emotional. I was sat having lunch in the canteen with all the kids during filming and getting a little misty-eyed.
"I was one of those kids 30 years ago. I'd wake up every morning excited about going to the studio. Grange Hill was the best time of my life."
Grange Hill was recently voted the best children's show of all time.
The final episode of the school drama will air on September 8.
