The General Medical Council (GMC) earlier ruled that the 45-year-old was "unfit to practise" after he admitted plagiarising other scholars' work.
The disciplinary panel sitting in Manchester said his "dishonest conduct" had brought his profession into disrepute.
Persaud, known for his appearances on This Morning and Radio 4's All In The Mind, denied that his actions were dishonest.
He told the GMC that the mental strain of combining media and NHS commitments had caused him to lift material from foreign scholars and pass it off as his own in a book and articles written for the British Medical Journal and The Independent.
Persaud said in a statement after the ruling: "I have apologised for this during the hearing and I apologise for this now. I am saddened this occurred while seeking to promote the work of academics to the wider public."
