Manchester RSL advertised

Published Friday, Jan 31 2003, 15:58 GMT | By James Welsh
The ITC has today formally advertised a restricted service licence for a television station serving Manchester. The current licence, held by Manchester Student TV Ltd, expires in November.

Restricted service TV licences are issued for four years, but operate on a 'no interference, no protection' basis - other transmitters may cause interference to the RSL service in the future, and if the RSL broadcasts cause interference elsewhere the transmitter will be reconfigured. In the worst case scenario, the service would be forced to vacate its channel before its alloted four years were up.

The service operates on channel 39 from a transmitter near Bolton. The ITC admits however that many people won't be able to receive the service, saying: "Many households within the potential coverage area will probably not have the correct aerials required to properly receive the RSL service, and hence coverage in practice will be reduced."

The deadline for applications is noon on Wednesday, April 30th, 2003. The winner will be announced in the summer.
