The DIY SOS presenter said that broadcasters over the last decade had resorted to humiliating the public for entertainment.
"For the past ten years, TV has been about taking working class people, dropping them out of their depth and everyone having a laugh," Knowles told The Mirror.
"Some have no talent and clearly have mental health issues. They are so deluded that they will be famous."
Speaking about his new BBC One show Last Choir Standing, Knowles commented: "Our show is about communities, there is no big prize, people are singing from the heart."
