Hague offered 'News For You' role

Former Conservative leader William Hague is "considering" an offer to host an episode of Have I Got News For You, according to BBC News Online.

Hague is one of several guest presenters being lined up for the new series of the news quiz, which will retain its 'guest presenter' format. A search to find a permanent replacement for the sacked host Angus Deayton has so far failed.

"There will be a series of guest presenters, and we have asked him," said Denise O'Donoghue, MD of Hat Trick, the company which makes the show for the BBC. "It will be the first time we have had someone who has been a leader of one of the major parties on the show."

A spokeswoman for Hague said that he was "seriously considering their offer".

She added: "I think he will be very good. He'll probably be more interesting than Iain Duncan Smith. Though you never know, he may be available to do the show. So might Tony Blair, come to think of it."

The new series begins next month.
