Sky News has become the second UK news channel to add a scrolling news ticker at the bottom of the screen, as the conflict with Iraq intensifies.

The ITV News Channel introduced a similar one last week. The trend for news channels to adopt these tickers increased after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, with the main American news channels adding them to keep viewers updated. However, despite protests from some viewers that they cause distraction from the main programme - viewers of CNN's Moneyline and NewsNight programmes being particularly vocal on the matter - they have become a permanent fixture.

As to whether there'll be a ticker on BBC News 24, the BBC told Digital Spy on Monday afternoon: "We don't have any plans to introduce a ticker on News 24. Headlines are regularly updated on screen via graphics and presenters and viewers after more in-depth information can also access BBCi via their red button."
