CNNI to maintain 'independent schedule'

CNN International plans to "maintain an independent schedule" from CNN/US, a spokesperson for the network told Digital Spy today.
The network said it only plans to simulcast with the US network "when it is the best way of providing our audiences with the most immediate live updates with the very latest information available at the time, pooling the resources of the CNN News Group," adding that "in general CNN International plans to maintain an independent schedule using our own team of highly experienced international anchors and producers."
Overnight, CNN in the US simulcast CNN International coverage of the strikes on Iraq instead of repeats of primetime programmes for the US west coast.
The spokesperson for the network said: "We are currently running a new, live, rolling news schedule presented from the main production centres in Atlanta, London and Hong Kong. Additional anchoring is being provided from a CNN broadcasting facility in Kuwait, using some of CNN's most experienced international correspondents and ahchors. The international coverage is reflecting the political, financial and human impact of the unfolding events in the Middle East from a global perspective."
As to the safety of CNN's correspondents in Baghdad - Nic Robertson and Rym Brahimi - the network said: "We continue to have images from the Iraqi capital and Nic and Rym are also available by beeper. We will make judgement calls for safety reasons on the best way to use our journalists on the ground, and adjust our broadcasting accordingly."
