Big ratings for 'News at Nine'

ITV's decision to shift its 10pm news bulletin to an earlier slot paid off last night as more than 8 million viewers tuned in for the latest on the situation with Iraq.

The News At Nine became the most-watched ITV1 news bulletin since the September 11 attacks in 2001, averaging 8 million viewers and a 33.2% audience share over half an hour.

The network also announced that the News At Nine would air seven days a week in its timeslot until further notice. An ITV spokesman said: "It is crucial that our viewers know exactly where and when they can find up-to-date news, even at weekends so it makes sense to run a regular 9 o’ clock bulletin right across the week."

The high figures for ITV's bulletin didn't appear to dent those for the BBC Ten O'Clock News, which managed a 7.5 million average and a 35.3% share.
