Ratings for the News at Nine almost halved yesterday as viewers instead tuned to the BBC for the Liverpool-Celtic Uefa cup game.

The programme, which aired over an hour, dropped to 5 million viewers and a 21.7% audience share, down from the impressive 8 million the night before.

The BBC decided to split news coverage and the football match across BBC One and Two, beginning at 8pm with the news on One (4.7m, 18.8%) and the game on Two (6.0m, 23.8%). At 9pm, the second half of the clash moved to BBC One, upping its audience by a million to 7.0m (29.8%).

The Prime Minister's 10pm address drew 7.0m (32%) on BBC One, followed by the 10 O'Clock News with a 7.6m average and a 39.6% share.

Overall, BBC One came out on top in primetime with an average share of 30.6% against ITV1's 22.7%. BBC Two was third with 13.5%, followed by C4 on 8.5% and five with 5.0%. The average share for non-terrestrials was up to a weighty 19.7%, possibly down to the boosted audiences for rolling news channels.
