BBC - seven services, five channels

In a keynote speech at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, BBC Director-General Greg Dyke outlined his plans to take the corporation into the digital era.

Delivering his speech, Dyke said: "I believe the stark choice facing the BBC today is that we either change or we simply manage decline gracefully and none of us joined the BBC to do that."

Dyke's Digital Plan

  • 9 O'Clock News moved to 10 O'Clock: Dyke said this would enhance regional output, bring up audience figures and allow the BBC to cover US events better

  • BBC One: the "Gold Standard" of network television - "more in touch, more contemporary..."

  • BBC Two: eventually refocused to show specialist factual programmes, leisure and lifestyle programmes, drama, comedy, and specialist sports - "a rich and diverse range of programmes..."

  • BBC Three - original British comedy, drama, music, arts and education - aimed at a young audience. During the day, the channel will show pre-school children's programming.

  • BBC Four - "unashamedly intellectual", offering a rolling financial news service at breakfast time, children's programmes through the day, and in the evenings screening programmes featuring arts, in-depth discussion and challenging music.

  • BBC News 24 - the corporation's flagship news network, offering a rolling 24 hour news service, with in-depth feature programmes.
