'Fame Academy' to return
Published Friday, May 2 2003, 15:42 BST | By James Welsh
The BBC has confirmed today (Friday) that a second series of reality show Fame Academy is on the way.
Anxious to differentiate the show from commercial rivals, such as Pop Idol, the corporation is highlighting a Fame Academy Bursary Fund, with the £1m made from the first series being available to people under the age of 30 - which the BBC says will "give thousands of talented performers the chance to pursue their dreams."
David Sneddon, the winner of the first series of Fame Academy, will be advising the Bursary's Board of Trustees. He said: "As a struggling young singer songwriter, I was desperate for someone to give me the break I needed.
"My chance came through Fame Academy, and I hope thousands of others get the opportunity they need through the £1 million raised so far and whatever we can raise during this second series."
Open audition dates for the new series have been announced, and are as follows:
- 17 May: W5 Odessey, Queen's Quay, Belfast
- 18 May: Hippodrome Theatre, Thorpe Street, Birmingham
- 25 May: Royal Concert Hall, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow
- 25 May: New Century House, Corporation Street, Manchester
- 31 May: Old Assembly Rooms, Fenkle Street, Newcastle
- 1 June: The Marriot, Mill Lane, Cardiff
- 7 June: The Novotel, Shortlands, Hammersmith
All auditions are open from 09:00 through to 19:00. Participants should bring along a full-length photo of themselves. Alternatively, a photo and VHS/audio tape of participants singing a song of their choice may be sent to Fame Academy, PO Box 32715, London W14 0WT by May 24.
