Five's 'Superstars' revival draws 1.3m

Five's revival of 1970s sports competition show Superstars made a fairly decent start in the ratings on Friday.

The comeback features Steve Redgrave, Roger Black, Mike Catt and Kelly Holmes as team captains leading stars such as Lee Sharpe, Iwan Thomas and Mark Foster.

Superstars drew 1.3m (6.2%) between 8pm and 9pm, on a par with the channel's average performance in the slot, and an improvement of 100,000 on a Jack The Ripper documentary at the same time last week.

The figure put Five ahead of Channel 4, where travel show A Place In The Sun: Home Or Away interested only 1.1m (5.2%).

Big Brother coverage, including the surprise eviction of Mario Marconi, was the channel's strongest draw on Friday. The first hour, from 9pm, was seen by 3.8m (17.4%), then 3.3m (18.9%) tuned in for Mario's eviction interview at 10.35pm.

ITV1 led the ratings for much of the night thanks to its drama staples. Emmerdale was watched by 6.2m (34%) from 7pm, then the 7.30pm and 8.30pm Coronation Street instalments attracted 8.2m (41.8%) and 7.4m (34.5%) respectively. A Touch Of Frost repeat drew 4.2m (20.8%) over two hours from 9pm.

BBC One had a relatively lacklustre night, its best audience of 7.7m (37.5%) coming at 8pm for EastEnders. The return of comedy gameshow Would I Lie To You attracted 3m (14.1%) over 30 minutes from 9pm.

BBC Two comfortably held up against Superstars in the 8pm hour with an audience of 2m (9.8%) for Gardeners' World.
