Jemini: "Performance of our lifetime"

Published Sunday, May 25 2003, 23:58 BST | By James Welsh
Whether you feel the voting was political, the performance bad, or the song just plain awful, one inescapable fact remains: the UK came back from 2003's Eurovision empty-handed.

Having managed to score - French accents at the ready - nil points in the contest, Jemini returned to the UK insisting their performance of Cry Baby was "one of the best," according to the BBC.

Jemini's rendition of the song, which rather unfortunately lurched off-key most notably at the beginning, resulted in the UK receiving its worst ever result in the contest.

However, song problems aside, there are many who believe the UK's score is actually punishment from fellow Europeans for the country's stance on the war with Iraq. Terry Wogan, during his commentary on the contest, remarked: "I think the UK is suffering from post-Iraq backlash."

Eurovision addicts need not fear about the UK's place in next year's contest however; even under the new two-night format, which includes a qualifying round, the UK is guaranteed a place in the grand final.
