Michael Aspel has quit This Is Your Life while questions remain unanswered as to the series' future.
Aspel recorded his last show, featuring Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell, last night and made his announcement shortly afterwards.
BBC One's controller, Lorraine Heggessey, said: "Michael Aspel has done a fantastic job and created many memorable programmes with his red book.
"He continues an important role on BBC One as the presenter of one of our longest running and most successful programmes, The Antiques Roadshow."
The BBC recently asked Thames Television, who make the show for the corporation, to "come up with new ideas to refresh the format."
Aspel commented: "I've been hosting the show for 15 years and I'm closing the book for the last time this evening.
"This Is Your Life has always been a great show and it's part of TV history. It's been a pleasure and a privilege."
