Walters will play Dr Anne Turner in the one-off film, written by Frank McGuinness, which will air on BBC One early next year.
Based on a true story, the drama sees Dr Turner diagnosed with an incurable neurological disease shortly after her husband has died of a similar condition. She decides that, when necessary, she will take her own life - but the situation divides her family and threatens to tear it apart.
"As a doctor, Anne Turner lived and worked by her principles, and she chose to die by them," said McGuinness. "This film recognises that rare courage."
