Published Monday, Jun 30 2003, 15:46 BST | By Neil Wilkes
At least £1 million is to be made available for the 'Fame Academy Bursary,' a new initiative helping music students around the country.
The BBC will make the funding available over the next three years, providing up to 400 musical instrument awards (worth up to £1200 each) to young people aged 11-15, as well as giving five educational grants to musicians aged 16-30.
Profits from the first series of the show, made from record sales and viewer voting, will be used "to nurture musical excellence in young people and encourage them to pursue their musical ambitions."
The second series, beginning this summer, will also provide funding for the bursary.
Applicants can apply online for the first round of instrument awards beginning tomorrow (Tuesday) via bbc.co.uk/fameacademy/bursary. Applications for the educational grants begin one month later.
