Announcement on BBC deal with FA delayed

"Last minute technical hitches" prevented the BBC from unveiling its new deal with the Football Association this morning.

The corporation was planning to announce the £250m joint deal with Sky at a press conference this morning, but delays in finalising some aspects of the contract meant that it had to be called off.

The deal, worth £150m less to the FA than the previous one, will see both broadcasters sharing the broadcast of FA Cup games and England matches.

It is believed that Sky has concluded the negotiations of its part of the agreement and that the delay is attributed to the BBC.

A BBC spokeswoman said that there was "still a chance" the deal could be announced later today, but more than likely it will now come on Monday.

"It is the very nature of rights negotiations that sometimes things take longer than you expect," she added. "The deal was held up by last minute technical hitches but it's just a case of dotting the i's and crossing the t's."
