Chris Banatvala, Senior Political Producer for Channel Four News, has been appointed as the ITC's Programme Officer with special responsibility for news and current affairs programmes.

Chris joins the ITC Programmes and Cable Division on 18 September. His responsibilities include taking a lead on issues concerning news and current affairs programming on all channels, including assessing the extent to which channels 3, 4 and 5 meet their positive programme requirements in this area. He will also monitor a range of programme genres across all delivery platforms for compliance with the ITC codes.

Chris joins the ITC from Channel Four, where he was Senior Political Producer since 1995. Before joining Channel Four News, he worked as a researcher and then producer on House to House, Channel Four's daily political news programme, and a range of 'specials'. He replaces Peter Ashforth, who is retiring after nearly 30 years with the ITC and its predecessor, the IBA.

"We are delighted that Chris is joining the ITC," says Steve Perkins, ITC Head of Factual Programmes. "He is certainly arriving at an exciting and busy time in terms of news issues, and we welcome the expertise and programme-making perspective he will bring."
