Strong finish for 'Top Gear'

The current series of Top Gear ended on Sunday night with over 5 million viewers.

The final episode, which featured a crossover with the German edition of the show, averaged 4.96m (22.6%) for BBC Two in the 8pm hour. It peaked with 5.4m (24.2%) but was down on the previous week's 6.1m (25.7%).

The figure put BBC Two ahead of BBC One, which interested 4.47m (20.1%) with the premiere of Tom Cruise film War of the Worlds between 8pm and 9.50pm. A new Midsomer Murders easily won the slot, however, drawing 6.59m (29.6%) to ITV1 between 8pm and 10pm. The channel also enjoyed success with Heartbeat, which averaged 5.01m (30.0%) in the 7pm hour.

Big Brother continued to pull in the numbers for Channel 4, meanwhile, with an average of 2.48m (11%) tuning in for the latest update at 9pm. An additional 425,000 watched on Channel 4+1.

Five suffered another disappointing performance, with none of its shows managing to break the 1 million mark all day. The broadcaster did enjoy success in multichannel homes, where CSI brought in 537,000 (3.6%) to Five US at 10pm.

Sky One's karaoke gameshow Don't Forget The Lyrics averaged 485,000 (3.4%) at 7pm, finishing ahead of the more-publicised Gladiators, which had 406,000 (3.7%) in the preceding hour.
