3.4m invest in 'Secret Millionaire'

Channel 4 enjoyed ratings success last night (Tuesday) with the return of The Secret Millionaire, according to early figures.

The first episode of the third series, which saw drug dealer-turned-millionaire James Benamor return to his Mancunian roots, averaged 3.42m (15%) for C4 in the 9pm hour. The figures are on par with the first two series and are up slightly on the 3.09m (14.3%) who saw Gordon Ramsay's The F Word in the same slot last week.

Winning the 9pm slot was BBC One's archaeological drama Bonekickers with 3.85m (16.9%). Although still ahead of its rivals, the show has haemorrhaged a significant number of viewers every week since its impressive 6.8m (30.5%) debut four weeks ago. In week two it lost 1.6m, then a further 800,000 in week three. Last week the audience fell by 400,000 and this week another 400,000 switched off.

ITV1's Doc Martin repeat put in a respectable 3.59m (15.8%) while on BBC Two, Jimmy Doherty's Farming Heroes averaged 2.01m (8.9%). Five had an impressive 2.58m (11.4%) for the new season opener of CSI: Miami.

Emmerdale triumphed over EastEnders in yet another head-to-head battle in the 7pm hour. The hour-long edition of the Yorkshire-based soap, which included scenes of domestic abuse, drew 6.16m (32.1%), a week-on-week rise of 700,000. EastEnders, shown over half an hour from 7.30pm, had 5.61m (27.8%), a rise of 300,000. A further 943,000 (5.3%) tuned in for the later repeat on BBC Three.

Holby City won the 8pm hour with 5.26m (24.3%), keeping ITV1 in second with the final episode of police dog documentary Send In The Dogs, with 4.59m (21.2%). Channel 4's Ten Years Younger, also airing its final episode, interested 1.93m (8.9%) and a double-bill of Dr Alice Roberts: Don't Die Young brought in respective audiences of 1.82m (8.7%) and 2.06m (9.2%) to BBC Two. Five managed 1.36m (6.3%) for the documentary The Ghosts of the Mary Rose: Revealed.

Big Brother enjoyed another strong performance at 10pm with an average of 3.27m (18.1%) and a further 246,000 on Channel 4+1. Five's CSI: New York had 1.86m (10.1%) then at 11pm, Law & Order: SVU appealed to 922,000 (9.7%).

EastEnders was the most-watched multichannel show of the day, followed by first-look Hollyoaks with 554,000 (3.5%) for E4 at 7pm. A double-bill of Family Guy brought impressive audiences of 520,000 (5%) and 463,000 (6.1%) to BBC Three in the 11pm hour, preceded by a Little Britain repeat with 446,000 (3%).

Dave continued to enjoy success with Jack Dee Live At The Apollo, drawing 440,000 (2.4%) for an episode shown at 9.40pm. On ITV2, Tuesday night movie The Hand That Rocks The Cradle averaged 296,000 (1.7%) between 9pm and 11.10pm.
