Portillo a hit, teen sex a miss

BBC Two's one-off documentary When Michael Portillo Became a Single Mum proved a massive ratings success last night, early figures indicate.

The programme, which saw the Tory MP take on the role of a single mum with four children and two jobs for one week, averaged 4.5 million viewers and a 19.6% audience share between 9pm and 10pm. Ratings peaked in the final quarter hour with 5.1 million (22.4%).

The show achieved the third highest audience for the channel this year so far, as well as achieving the feat of trouncing BBC One, which had just 3.6 million (15.9%) for The Human Mind.

Elsewhere, Channel 4's Teen Big Brother: The Experiment sunk to a new low of 1.9 million (10.8%) at 10pm, despite being the heavily-publicised episode where two of the contestants had sex. The ratings were in fact the lowest ever for any episode of Big Brother shown on Channel 4 in the UK. Despite this, a spokeswoman said the network was happy with its ratings: "We are very pleased with the way Teen Big Brother is performing and last night it was up against particularly tough competition - football and a movie."
