Nearly 10 million viewers tuned in for the BBC's re-enactment of Pompeii's final day, early ratings figures show.

The CGI-enhanced Pompeii - The Last Day drew an average of 9.5 million viewers - a 38.1% audience share - across an hour from 9pm.

The documentary peaked at 9.8 million viewers (40.0%), making it the most-watched factual programme since Walking With Dinosaurs.

Martin Kemp's ITV drama Family suffered as a result with an audience of just 4.3 million (17.1%).
