Sky News to 'push for growth' in Europe

Sky News has announced the appointment of a new international advertising sales partner as part of a "commitment to promoting growth internationally" for the 24-hour news channel.
National Geographic Channel Europe is now the channel's exclusive international advertising sales partner throughout for the channel's European feed. NGC's senior VP for advertising sales and partnership marketing, Deborah Armstrong, said:
"Whilst the international business focus is recent, the service is already firmly established on the international scene on a residential direct to home (dth), and cable basis and is also important to Governments, statesmen and opinion formers. On a daily basis, the European audience of Sky News is more than double some of the more established players and is snapping at the heels of the leading news channel, which is less than 1% ahead."
The news comes as part of a general expansion of the Sky News operation. The station has added equipment to its newsgathering resources including the 'SkyCopter', and has even attempted a US launch. That was however halted, reportedly due to opposition from US sister station FOX News. The station is planning a dedicated Irish news bulletin during primetime early next year.
Sky News chief Nick Pollard said:
"Sky News is known for the speed of its coverage and flexibility in reporting live news. We have built up a strong and loyal audience both in the UK and overseas. There is a real appetite for Sky News' brand of live breaking news and it makes sense for us to better serve our international viewers."
