A British version of US game show Wipeout has been commissioned by BBC One.

Produced by Endemol subsidiary Initial, the programme will see contestants competing for cash prizes by taking part in some of the most gruelling and extreme obstacle courses ever created. Filming will take place in Argentina, where Endemol has constructed a huge set for international versions of the show.

Wipeout premiered on ABC in the US two months ago and has already been renewed for a second season by the network. The format of the show has also been sold to a number of other countries, including broadcasters in Australia, Holland, Spain and Germany.

The BBC's Controller for Entertainment Commissioning, Elaine Bedell, said: "This is a funny, challenging, physical game show - and will be a welcome addition to the very great variety of entertainment shows we offer the BBC One family audience."

Nick Samwell-Smith, Initial's Creative Director, added: "The Wipeout format delivers prime-time family entertainment and the UK audience is going to love every minute of this high-octane new show. There will be breathtaking thrills and spills on one of the biggest, most extraordinary obstacle courses ever built."
