'New Tricks' stumbles at final hurdle

New Tricks lost more than a million viewers on Monday night but was still one of the day's best-performing shows.

The final episode of the fifth series had 7.82m (31.3%) for BBC One in the 9pm hour, down from a gigantic 8.9m (36%) last week. Overall the series averaged 8.4m (35.8%) across eight episodes.

The stumble allowed Coronation Street to reclaim the number one spot in the Monday night ratings. Its two episodes, shown at 7.30pm and 8.30pm, drew 8m (37.2%) and 8.28m (34.5%) respectively. Emmerdale lost 1m week-on-week to average 5.5m (27.2%) at 7pm.

The return of The One Show in a one-off 7.30pm slot was seen by a respectable 3.07m (14.2%), then EastEnders improved to 7.36m (32%) at 8pm. A Panorama examination of Britishness intrigued 2.61m (10.9%) from 8.30pm.

ITV1's one-off biographical drama Pierrepoint, starring Timothy Spall as state hangman Albert Pierrepoint, was met by a sombre 3.63m (15.7%) between 9pm and 10.50pm.

BBC Two had another strong Monday night, although ratings were slightly down overall on last week. University Challenge had 2.6m (11.3%) at 8pm, then the second episode of The Hairy Bakers cooked up 3.02m (12.6%) in the latter half of the hour. Dragons' Den entertained 3.36m (13.5%) in the 9pm hour, then Tom Hanks movie The Terminal enlisted 1.63m (11.1%) until 12.05am.

Five had a disastrous primetime performance, starting with just 752,000 (3.2%) for Fifth Gear at 8pm. The three-hour clip show Most Shocking Celebrity Moments of the 00s averaged 764,000 (4.2%). The channel's best audience of the day was 879,000 (6.1%) for afternoon disaster movie The Towering Inferno.

Channel 4's new-look daytime lineup began successfully, outdoing most of its primetime fare. A new series of Deal Or No Deal opened to 1.59m (13.4%) at 4.15pm, then new gameshow Wogan's Perfect Recall improved to 1.66m (13%) at 5pm. A new run of Come Dine With Me followed with 1.77m (12%), then The Simpsons had 1.7m (9.7%) and Hollyoaks 1.35m (7.2%).

In primetime, a Dispatches special on the involvement of banks in the credit crunch crisis drew 1.56m (6.6%) in the 8pm hour. The third episode of Kevin McCloud and the Big Town Plan continued to linger on 1.1m (4.4%) at 9pm, then Big Brother delivered a reliable 2.79m (14.3%), with a further 169,000 (1.9%) on timeshift.

Sky Sports 1's live coverage of the Premier League game between Portsmouth and Man Utd drew a sizeable 1.32m (6.4%) between 7.30pm and 10.15pm, comfortably the largest multichannel audience of the day.

First-look Hollyoaks had 468,000 (2.7%) for E4 at 7pm and on ITV2, another screening of Pretty Woman brought in 458,000 (2.5%) at 9pm and 168,000 (1.4%) on timeshift.

Fiver's movie Daddy Day Care amused 333,000 (1.7%) from 9pm to 10.50pm.
