The project, which is based on David Almond's award-winning novel, began shooting in Cardiff today.
Also among the cast are Kelly MacDonald, Bill Milner and John Simm. It is scripted by Feel Films and Annabel Jankel.
Almond's book follows the adventures of Michael (Milner), who discovers a creature called Skellig, which is part owl, part angel, in his shed.
Skellig will be broadcast on Sky1 and Sky1 HD in spring 2009.
