Published Tuesday, Oct 17 2000, 19:04 BST | By Neil Wilkes
Ending weeks of speculation, rumour and intrigue, MTV is delighted to announce that three superstars - mega music chameleon Madonna, screen siren and multi-faceted entertainer Jennifer Lopez, and Latino sensation Ricky Martin are to join the already dazzling performer line-up for the 7th annual MTV Europe Music Awards, which broadcasts live from The Globe, Stockholm on 16th November 2000. Ms Lopez will be premiering the first single from her forthcoming album live at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Stockholm. The new artists will join previously announced performers the legendary U2, Backstreet Boys, Bomfunk MC's, Guano Apes, Moby, The Spice Girls, Robbie Williams and Ronan Keating.
The latest talent line-up is announced as the tickets for the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards go on sale via a special ticket hotline number. This will be revealed exclusively at a special TV bulletin broadcast live on MTV at 11.00 UK/12.00 CET on Monday 16th October. With approximately 6000 tickets on sale for the hottest awards ceremony Europe has ever seen, it is anticipated that tickets will sell out within minutes of going on sale.
Madonna, nominated for 3 awards (Best Female, Best Dance and Best Song) will be performing for the second time at the awards, having dazzled the audience at The Filaforum, Milan in 1998 with a stunning rendition of 'Power of Goodbye' and from where she won 2 awards for Best Female and Best Album - 'Ray of Light'. Jennifer Lopez (nominated for Best Female and Best R&B) and Ricky Martin (nominated for Best Male) will be making their debut performances at the music 'Oscars'.
Masterminding order amongst the ever growing cast of performers and presenters in the role of host of the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards, is the multi-talented Wyclef Jean. MTV today revealed two more members of that cast - stunning French actress Virginie LeDoyen, famed for her role in Hollywood blockbuster 'The Beach' and UK house diva and 4-time nominee Sonique (Best New Act, Best Dance Act, Best Song and Best UK & Ireland Act). The pair join a top international line-up of already announced guest presenters including: Anastacia, Aqua, rock legend Alice Cooper, The Cardigans, Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, Eiffel 65, Andreas Johnson, Kelis and Moloko's Roisin.
The 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards will comprise 21 individual awards. The nominations for 11 of the Awards have been compiled by MTV Europe's voting "Academy" of 800 people, consisting of key figures from the European music industry and MTV viewers from across Europe. Nominations in the regional categories (Best Dutch Act, Best French Act, Best Nordic Act, Best German Act, Best Italian Act, Best Polish Act, Best Spanish Act and Best UK & Ireland Act) are chosen by viewers of MTV's regional services. With the exception of the Best Video and FREE YOUR MIND awards, whose winners are chosen exclusively by MTV Europe, all nomination categories are voted for by MTV viewers, ensuring that all winners are chosen by truly devoted music fans.
Less than two weeks into the six week voting period, MTV viewers are set to smash previous Europe Music Awards voting records with over 750,000 votes already received via the website alone. Last year's awards in Dublin received a staggering total of 2 million votes from all over Europe.
