The curtains are to come down on the long-running TV show Grange Hill this afternoon.

The school drama was first broadcast 30 years ago and has since tackled storylines concerning drug addiction, teenage pregnancy and racism.

Writers have promised the final episode will be one to remember, centring on the discovery of an unexploded bomb under the school. Todd Carty will return to play Tucker Jenkins as he offers advice to pupils.

Tony Wood, creative director of Lime Pictures, said: "It has been a privilege to be involved with one of the great titles in the history of British television."

The BBC announced it was axing the drama in February as part of a shake-up at CBBC.
