
Bruce Parry's new series got off to a strong start in the ratings last night with over 3 million viewers.
Amazon with Bruce Parry, chronicling the explorer's voyage along the length of the Amazon river, drew an average of 3.19m (13.6%) in the 9pm hour for BBC Two. Five had 1.17m (5%) for Extreme Fishing With Robson Green, finishing ahead of Channel 4's topical new series The Price Of Property, which managed 1.1m (4.7%).
BBC One won the slot with 5.4m (23%) for a repeat of New Tricks, while ITV1's drama The Children concluded with a decent 4.66m (19.9%).
Two episodes of Coronation Street pulled in 8.67m (41.2%) at 7.30pm and 8.63m (36.4%) at 8.30pm, while EastEnders put in 8.27m (35.9%) for BBC One at 8pm and 543,000 (3.3%) for BBC Three at 10pm. Emmerdale managed 6.37m (32.4%) at 7pm.
BBC Two also performed well in the 8pm hour, with 2.81m (12.2%) for University Challenge and 2.36m (10%) for new cookery series What To Eat Now. Channel 4's Dispatches investigation into the composition of wine brought in 1.43m (6.1%) and on Five, Fifth Gear nudged past the 1 million mark to average 1.03m (4.4%) for the hour.
Elsewhere, Panorama delivered 2.62m (11.1%) for its report on the Omagh bombing, and ITV1's Tonight enticed 3.22m (14%) with "Foxy Knoxy" On Trial.
First-look Hollyoaks had a mighty 833,000 (4.9%) for E4 at 7pm, with 76,000 (0.4%) on timeshift. The earlier Channel 4 broadcast had been seen by 1.66m (8.8%) and 99,000 (0.5%).
A double-bill of Hell's Kitchen USA drew 474,000 (2.3%) and 479,000 (3.3%) to ITV2, while on Sky1, a new episode of Ross Kemp On Gangs interested 356,000 (1.8%) in the 8pm hour.
