Ofcom launches EPG consultation

Published Friday, Jan 16 2004, 20:14 GMT | By James Welsh
Communications super-regulator Ofcom has launched a consultation to draw up a code of conduct for electronic programme guide (EPG) providers.

EPGs are provided on digital cable, digital satellite and digital terrestrial television services and show details about upcoming programmes available to viewers. Ofcom's code would specify three main items; firstly, that public service channels (the BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, S4C and Five) be given "appropriate prominence" in the guides; secondly, that the EPGs should carry information regarding what the regulator terms "access services" for vision and/or hearing-impaired people - subtitling, audio description, and/or signing, for example; and thirdly, that Sky should continue being required to give EPG access to satellite channels whether or not they're part of Sky's subscription packages.

Ofcom is asking for your views. Send them in via email, via the web, by calling 0845 456-3000, by textphone to 0845 456-3003, or by mail to Peter Bourton, Ofcom, Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road, London SE1 9HA. The consultation will close on March 25.
