Living's 'Lipstick' draws just 200,000

Living's new US acquisition Lipstick Jungle got off to a poor start in the ratings last night despite a high-profile marketing campaign.

The series, from Sex and the City writer Candace Bushnell, drew just 198,000 (1.4%) to the channel in the 10pm hour. The figure was only marginally higher than the 197,000 who watched Living With Jade Goody and a CSI repeat in the same slot last week.

Leading the hour was BBC Three, with 462,000 (2.8%) for its EastEnders repeat and 200,000 (1.6%) for new comedy Massive.

Ross Kemp: A Kenya Special brought in 532,000 (2.8%) to Sky1 over 90 minutes from 9pm and Film4's screening of the movie Mr & Mrs Smith averaged 388,000 (2.4%) between 9pm and 11.20pm.

Also rating higher than Lipstick were ITV3's showing of Prime Suspect: The Final Act, with 244,000 (2.3%); Alan Carr: Tooth Fairy Live, with 205,000 for E4, and Dave's Never Mind The Buzzcocks repeat, with 256,000 (1.9%) from 10.20pm.

Living did have some ratings success in the form of America's Next Top Model, which launched to 329,000 (1.6%) in the 9pm hour. ITV2's Hell's Kitchen USA easily won the slot with 536,000 (2.7%).

New ITV1 drama The Place Of Execution had a strong debut at 9pm with 5.97m (26.1%), ending BBC One's long-running dominance of the 9pm Monday slot. The latter's repeat of New Tricks was second for the hour with 4.98m (21.8%), while BBC Two's Amazon With Bruce Parry lost almost a million viewers on last week to average 2.28m (10%).

Channel 4's The Price Of Property interested 1.14m (10%), just ahead of the final episode of Extreme Fishing With Robson Green on Five, which had 1.09m (4.8%).

Coronation Street won the Monday night soaps battle, with 8.91m (42.1%) tuning in for its 7.30pm episode and 8.54m (37.2%) returning for the second instalment an hour later. EastEnders put in 8.73m (38.1%) at 8pm, and Emmerdale delivered 6.76m (34.6%) at 7pm.

The One Show posted another impressive figure, with 4.65m (23.8%) tuning in at 7pm. Panorama had 3.37m (14.7%) for BBC One at 8.30pm, finishing a shade higher than ITV1's Tonight, which managed 3.36m (14.7%) half an hour earlier.

BBC Two's University Challenge interested 2.86m (12.5%) at 8pm, then the audience dipped to 2.03m (8.8%) for the second episode of cookery series What To Eat Now at 8.30pm. Channel 4's Dispatches: The Human Cost of the Credit Crunch had 1.1m (4.8%) while on Five, Fifth Gear mustered 0.89m (3.9%).
