The story revolves around three British men whose experiences of the war in Iraq transform their lives.
Nesbitt will play Sgt Mike Swift alongside This Is England actor Stephen Graham and Hollyoaks star Warren Brown.
Patrick Spence, head of drama for BBC Northern Ireland, commented that the show is the product of four years' work.
"I am incredibly proud to be watching them all head off into production, a brilliant script in their hands, absolutely determined to bring this story, and all that it means, to the widest possible audience," he said.
Occupation is currently being filmed in Northern Ireland and Morocco and will air on BBC One next year.
