4.8m get 'Wired' to ITV1

ITV1's new drama Wired made an encouraging start in the ratings last night (Monday), according to early figures.

The three-part thriller, starring Laurence Fox and Charlie Brooks as bank fraudsters, brought in 4.84m (21.4%) in the 9pm hour. The figure is up on the 4.43m (19.4%) who watched Place of Execution in the same slot last week.

On BBC One at the time, Crimewatch appealed to 4.12m (18.2%) and on BBC Two, Amazon With Bruce Parry interested 3.05m (13.5%).

Channel 4's one-off drama The Shooting Of Thomas Hurndall, based on the real-life shooting of a British student in Gaza, failed to deliver a strong audience. Just 540,000 (2.8%) tuned in between 9pm and 11pm, placing Channel 4 last of the terrestrial broadcasters. Five had 750,000 (3.3%) for its endurance competition Unbreakable, then 921,000 (5.7%) tuned in for a repeat of Paul Merton In India.

A Cambridge-Oxford showdown brought in 2.99m (12.6%) to BBC Two's University Challenge at 8pm but was beaten by an EU-themed Tonight, with 3.26m (13.7%). An update on the US Presidential election in Panorama was seen by 2.71m (11.3%) at 8.30pm, and on BBC Two, the penultimate episode of Valentine Warner's What To Eat Now managed 2.29m (9.6%). Five had 1.21m (5.1%) for The Gadget Show, and on Channel 4, Dispatches: The Trouble With British Airways interested 0.97m (4.1%).

Two visits to Coronation Street brought in 9.9m (43.7%) and 9.38m (39.1%) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm respectively, while EastEnders put in a strong 9.54m (40.2%) at 8pm. Emmerdale was third with 7.55m (35.8%).

ITV1 had an overall primetime share of 26.1% (last week: 24.8%), ahead of BBC One's 21.9% (22.9%) and BBC Two's 9.4% (9%). Five had 3.8% (4%), while Channel 4 slipped to a disappointing 3.6% (5.5%).

Hollyoaks pulled in a cool 849,000 (4.7%) for E4 (+1: 149,000, 0.7%) to rank as the most popular multichannel programme of the day, with Fiver's Home & Away in second on 674,000 (4%).

The latest instalment of Hell's Kitchen USA brought in 630,000 (3.2%) to ITV2 in the 9pm hour (+1: 105,000, 0.7%), placing the channel ahead of Channel 4 for the period. On ITV4 at the same time, sci-fi drama Sanctuary kept up the pace with a strong 533,000 (2.7%), while on Dave, QI notched up 538,000 (2.7%).

BBC Three's top audience was 552,000 (3.4%) for EastEnders and BBC Four peaked with 376,000 (1.9%) for documentary The Story Of Maths at 9pm.
