The Channel 4 show, which Wan co-hosts with Myleene Klass, is a televised hunt for women with natural beauty.
However, Wan was branded a "moron" by Mirror columnist Kevin O'Sullivan for a scene where participants were blasted with a hose to remove their makeup.
Instead of liberated, O'Sullivan claimed that the women probably felt "humiliated, demeaned and exploited".
Wan told ITN that contestants were never in danger and were never "put into an area where they were so vulnerable, they wouldn't have been able to cope".
He said: "This show is going to be provoking controversy because of the nature of the show. What we're doing is turning around and saying, 'right, stand up to everything that we believe, stand up to everything that we've been told over the years and form a new opinion'.
"And the new opinion is, you can be naturally beautiful and gorgeous."
