Cowell receives lifetime achievement gong

Simon Cowell was presented with a Special Recognition gong at last night's National TV Awards.

Accepting the award from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, the music mogul and TV talent show host said of his rise to fame: "I've definitely become more spoilt, more shallow, and can honestly say I have loved every single minute of it. It's the best job in the world."

His ITV1 show The X Factor was pipped at the post in the Most Popular Talent Show category, which was won by the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.

The award for Outstanding Drama Performance went to David Tennant, on the same night that he announced he will be quitting Doctor Who at the end of 2009.

EastEnders was named the Most Popular Serial Drama, while the award for Entertainment Presenter went to Ant and Dec.
