Jeff Stelling is back in the running for the Countdown job, according to tabloid reports.
The Sky Sports presenter may be confirmed for the presenting role as early as the end of this week, claims The Sun.
Stelling, who was originally rumoured for the job in October, was approached after Alexander Armstrong pulled out of negotiations with Channel 4.
"Barring any problems, he has the job," said a source.
The Soccer Saturday host, who would be the show's fourth presenter, was tipped for the job in 2005 following the death of Richard Whiteley, but lost out to Des Lynam.
