Angus Deayton will replace Jonathan Ross as the host of the 2008 British Comedy Awards.

Ross stood down from his regular presenting role following the fallout from the Andrew Sachs Radio 2 phone prank row.

"Angus is simply one of the best," said controller of ITV music and events Guy Freeman.

"We always hoped that he would agree to take on the challenge of hosting one of TV's toughest gigs, and now we're thrilled that he has."

Deayton's TV credits include One Foot In The Grave, Nighty Night, Have I Got News For You and Hell's Kitchen.

The 19th British Comedy Awards air live on ITV on December 6.
