CBBC's Blast Lab will see youngsters displaying their scientific knowledge in a series of "crazy experiments", the broadcaster said.
The job will mark the Top Gear presenter's first stint in children's TV, although he has already displayed his scientific prowess hosting Brainiac for Sky.
The show forms part of the CBeebies and CBBC winter/spring lineup, which will also see Steve Backshall travelling the world in his quest to find the 60 deadliest animals on Earth.
Programmes highlighting the lives of homeless children in Britain are also scheduled.
