The BBC One mystery show, which stars Alan Davies, is returning for a one-off edition on New Year's Day. It will be the first new episode of the programme since 2004.
Renwick, who also created One Foot in the Grave, has now revealed that he is expecting a backlash from viewers after the episode has aired.
Speaking to The Times, he explained: "People say, 'Oh Jonathan Creek's coming back. Fantastic.' And then they watch it and go: 'God, what a mistake.' Which is what happened with One Foot in the Grave. So I tend to expect the worst."
Renwick also confessed that writing a new episode of the programme was a "safe decision" - as he did not want to deal with the pressure of starting a new project from scratch.
He said: "I had three options. Retire. Or go away for the best part of six months and struggle to come up with something else, sit down and write it, and then try to interest someone else in it. Or I could resurrect Jonathan Creek."
