
A new season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation brought in impressive ratings for Five last night (Tuesday), early figures suggest.
The ninth season opened to 3.86m (16.4%) in the 9pm hour, helping Five to second place amongst the terrestrials for the period. Only BBC One's New Tricks repeat fared better, with 4.69m (19.9%).
CSI beat the latest episode of Celebrity Big Brother, seen by 2.96m (12.7%) on Channel 4 and 285k (1.8%) on Channel 4+1. ITV1's one-off documentary Extreme Slimmers took just 2.42m (10.3%) and BBC Two had 2.19m (9.3%) for the second episode of Nicholas Crane's Britannia: The Great Elizabethan Journey.
Before CSI, Five had 1.56m (6.7%) for Secrets of Egypt: Valley of the Kings and afterwards, a repeat of an old episode put in 1.94m (10.9%). Five's average primetime share rose four points to 9%.
Trinny and Susannah's latest series for ITV1, Trinny & Susannah Meet Their Match, got off to a poor start at 8pm with just 2.39m (10.3%) for the hour. BBC One's Holby City brought in a slot-winning 6.2m (26.7%) and on C4, the final episode of Country House Rescue notched up 2.25m (9.7%).
EastEnders was the most-watched show of the day, with 6.83m (30.4%) for BBC One from 7.30pm and a further 1.38m (7.6%) for BBC Three at 10pm. An hour-long Emmerdale put in 6.5m (29.8%) for ITV1 from 7pm.
Hollyoaks delivered 1.56m (7.6%) to Channel 4 and 750k (4%) to E4, while on Five, Neighbours had 1.53m (9.4%) and Home & Away had 919k (4.7%).
BBC One extended its lead in primetime by 0.4 points, averaging 24%. ITV1 dropped from 15.4% to 14.9%, while Channel 4 rose one point to 9.8%. Five was fourth, leaving BBC Two last with 8.4%, down from 9.3%.
