MTV takes TRL to Leicester Square

MTV has finally succeeded with its plans to relocate its live output to a new studio in Leicester Square.
For some time the channel has wanted to broadcast from the new studios in order to provide a "bustling backdrop" for its flagship show, TRL, in the same way that TRL USA does in New York's Times Square.
Westminster Council rejected the station's planning application last year, fearful that crowds gathering at the site would cause public disorder problems. Now MTV has convinced the appeals court of its case, and is planning to relocate within two months.
"Not only will it be a significant addition to media facilities in the capital, it will also allow us to launch TRL with the bustling backdrop of Leicester Square - one of our most identifiable and popular London landmarks," Michiel Bakker, MD of MTV Networks UK and Ireland, told the Guardian today.
Sister station Nickelodeon will also use the new site.
