Schwartz is reportedly "close" to signing a development deal with the network for the new "companion show", which won't be a spinoff.
Nevertheless, most of his production team from The O.C. - McG, Stephanie Savage, Bob De Laurentiis and Warner Bros. Television - will be on board for the new project.
Schwartz is expected to write the pilot for the new series, taking an executive producing role thereafter.
The show is likely to premiere January 2005 off the back of the fourth American Idol.
