Alan Sugar confirmed for 'Apprentice UK'

Amstrad chairman Sir Alan Sugar has been confirmed as the star of The Apprentice in the UK.

The reality series became a ratings monster when it aired in the US at the start of the year. A peak of 30 million viewers tuned in to see 16 entrepreneurs compete for a position at the helm of one of billionaire mogul Donald Trump's companies.

After several months of negotiations, the BBC has now won the rights to air a local version of the show on BBC Two "later this year", fending off competition from Channel 4.

Sugar - who owns a real estate company, software firm Viglen and a chunk of Tottenham Hotspurs FC - will preside over the 14 contenders, eliminating one each week. The winner will get a "lucrative job" at one of his companies.

It is believed the BBC has also picked up the rights to air the original US series as part of the deal.
