ITV journalist Martin Bashir has been poached by US TV network ABC to become a correspondent on its flagship 20/20 news show.
Bashir, most famous for his controversial interview with Michael Jackson, has also fronted programmes on the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? scandal and Princess Diana, all of which have aired on ABC.
"It will very difficult to leave but I am looking forward to the challenge of working in New York," said Bashir today. "The last five years at ITV have been some of the most productive and happiest of my career. The team has produced every kind of current affairs format from drama-documentary to news magazine.
"To have won the Royal Television Society's programme of the year award three times in five years says everything about the quality of the team on Tonight, which I believe is one of the best in British television journalism. I've no doubt whatsoever that they'll continue to go from strength to strength."
The deal is said to be worth $1m (£530,000).
