BAFTAs attendance up 1.4 million

A peak of over 5 million viewers tuned in for this year's BAFTA Awards last night, a significant increase on last year's audience.

The main hour of the ceremony, fronted by Jonathan Ross, pulled in 4.92m (18.5%) for BBC One from 9pm. Last year's coverage had 3.48m (14.2%) in the 9pm hour on February 10, 2008.

The first hour of the ceremony went out to less success on BBC Two in the 8pm hour. Just 2.38m (8.6%) tuned in, placing the channel fourth for the period. Last year, the second hour of coverage drew 2.9m (19.2%) for BBC One from 10.20pm.

Earlier, coverage from the red carpet managed just 196k (0.8%) for BBC Three between 7pm and 7.35pm.

Meanwhile, Dancing On Ice had another strong week, with an average of 9.01m (33.7%) tuning in to ITV1 between 6.50pm and 8.30pm. A new episode of Wild At Heart followed with 7.08m (26.1%), then Todd Carty's final dance in Dancing On Ice: The Skate-Off was seen by 7.37m (27.9%).

Antiques Roadshow notched up BBC One's best audience of the day, with 6.6m (24.9%) watching in the 7pm hour. Lark Rise To Candleford was also popular, picking up 5.67m (20.5%) from 8pm.

After the BAFTAs, BBC Two's Explore interested 1.56m (5.9%) in the 9pm hour.

Channel 4 had success in primetime with a screening of fashion comedy The Devil Wears Prada. The movie, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, averaged 2.75m (10.2%) between 8pm and 10.10pm. The final episode in the current series of The Sunday Night Project, guest-hosted by Lily Allen, followed with 1.45m (8.6%).

Five took 990k (3.6%) for a repeat of last week's Ice Road Truckers at 8pm, then Tommy Lee Jones thriller US Marshals kept 1.59m (7.7%) until 11.35pm.

ITV1 had the overall lead in primetime with an average share of 26.5%, a full five points ahead of BBC One. Channel 4 was third with 8.1% (+1: 1.4%), followed by BBC Two with 7.8% and Five with 5.4%.

More4's Come Dine With Me marathon was especially popular last night, peaking with 1.02m (5%) for the episode shown at 6.20pm.

Sky1's Lost drew 845k (3.5%) in the 9pm hour, then a new episode of Ross Kemp: Return To Afghanistan built the audience to 883k (5.1%).

A screening of Shrek 2 grabbed 701k (2.8%) for BBC Three from 7.35pm, after which the latest episode of Being Human interested 668k (2.8%).

ITV2's top audience was 590k (2.5%) for Supernatural in the 9pm hour. A further 121k (0.7%) watched an hour later via ITV2+1.
