The success story of the night was Channel 5's coverage of Miss World 2000, fronted by chat-show host Jerry Springer.
The ceremony averaged 1.8 million viewers and an 8% share between 20.00 and 22.30, according to early figures. 3.2 million tuned in for the final half an hour, to see India's Ms Chopra take the crown.
Overall, Channel 5 enjoyed a 5.4% peak time share last night, compared with 3.2% the week before.
