John Sullivan told The Mail On Sunday that the new series will focus on Del Boy's mysterious dad Freddy Robdal.
Nicholas Lyndhurst, who played Rodney in the original, is apparently lined up to play Freddy The Frog, a gangster from Peckham.
Although the BBC is yet to give the prequel a final go-ahead, Sullivan said: "Nick and I are both on board the train, if you like, waiting to arrive at the station."
The original sitcom first aired in 1981 and had a regular slot until 1996 when characters Del Boy and Rodney became millionaires after finding an antique watch.
