Jo Brand's new BBC Two series The Speaker had a disappointing start last night, according to the latest figures.

The show, which saw Brand search for Britain's best young speaker, pulled in a lowly 880k (3.8%) during the 8pm hour.

It was beaten by Channel 4's new series Willie's Chocolate Revolution, which managed 1.53m (6.6%) and Holby City's 5.52m (23.7%) for BBC One.

Five came last during the hour, drawing 825k (3.55) for Riddle Of The Romanovs: Revealed, an investigation into the 1918 execution of Nicholas II of Russia and his family.

ITV1's coverage of the Manchester United game against FC Porto averaged 5.98m (25.7%) between 7.30pm and 10pm.

At 9pm, the second episode of BBC One's All The Small Things put in 4.23m (17.6%), and BBC Two's new series Horse People With Alexandra Tolstoy was seen by 880k (3.6%).

CSI pulled in 2.77m (11.5%) for Five, a drop of 240k from last week's episode, while The Hospital, the first in a three-part Channel 4 series, interested 2.07m (8.6%).

Overall, BBC One came top during primetime with an average share of 23.7% to ITV1's 22.9%. Channel 4 was third with 7.7% (+1: 1%), followed by Five with 6.6% and BBC Two with 4.4%.

Elsewhere, the new episode of Shameless drew 689k (8.4%) for E4 at 11pm, while 392k (2.7%) tuned in for the penultimate episode of Horne & Corden on BBC Three between 10.30pm and 11pm.
