Big Brother winner in suicide jump bid
Published Thursday, Aug 19 2004, 21:05 BST | By Iain Chapman
Jose Maria, the winner of Portugal's first Big Brother, has threatened to commit suicide by throwing himself from a Lisbon bridge.
The drama took place over the weekend. Local reports say that Mr Maria had threatened to jump from the Lisbon suspension bridge which spans the Tagus River. After 45 minutes, two policemen finally managed to hoist him to safety.
Since winning Big Brother in 2000, Mr Maria, 27, became an overnight national hero in Portugal. However, after the initial press interest and a handful of advertising contracts, the media spotlight lost interest. He had soon spent his 100,000 euro prize fund on a string of failed business ventures.
During recent media interviews with Mr Maria, he expressed regret over entering the show.
